Crafting Effective Captions

Have you ever tried to write a caption for your Instagram post and your mind went blank? Or maybe you wrote the "perfect" caption but you didn't see the effect or results you were hoping for? Captions are important but sometimes can be a little elusive.

The Purpose of Captions

Well, let's get straight to it - a captions purpose is not just for telling people what they’re looking at - captions are not intended to only explain whats going on, but are really meant to encompass your brand's voice and build a connection to your audience. A perfectly crafted caption will not only add personality, but connect with viewers and make them feel like you’re speaking to THEM. We don’t want to sound like we’re shouting to our audience, hoping to slightly appeal to every person who might be listening, but rather, speak in a way that makes our ideal viewer feel as if we’re speaking to her - like we get her.

The beautiful thing about social media (and sometimes the scary part) is having the opportunity to be unique, authentic and yourself. The best thing you can do for yourself and your brand is to capture your true, authentic self in your captions.

Social media captions are one of the most underutilized aspects of social media. Typically, what I hear from customers time and time again is this: they just don't know what to say. You can work 100 hours on a project, it could be your greatest passion, it could be your livelihood, but when you sit down to write out a caption for your post on Instagram or Facebook, you pause, and your mind goes blank - you just don’t know what to say. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be perfect and clever and funny, but that’s not what is going to win people over. When I write captions, I pretend like I’m talking to my best friend - what would I say? How would my voice sound? Maybe I would tell her I’ve been having a rough week but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe I would tell her I’ve been having an AMAZING week and I’m super pumped about a few projects I’m working on. The point is, just be REAL and be YOU. You don’t need to appeal to everyone, you just need to appeal to the right one.
